Id like to bring another cat into my home but im not sure how to go about it. Help?

I have a 6 year old neutered male cat right now who got along great with our family dog until we lost her to a car accident. Its just me and my cat now and I know hes lonely so I want to get another cat to keep him company while Im at work so he doesn't get so bored. He is fully declawed (and please i don't need to hear about how bad i am for doing that, i was fifteen when i made the decision and i didn't fully understand how they did the procedure, i would never do it again) so is it in his best interest to find another fully declawed cat? Im just scared that my cat wouldn't be able to defend himself in a fight if i adopted a kitty with claws. And should i get a boy or girl cat? My cats never really been around other cats so i don't know how he will react. If theres anything else you can think of that i need to know, do tell. Thank you for your helpId like to bring another cat into my home but im not sure how to go about it. Help?
We just found a kitten in our backyard a while ago, and decided to keep him. We already had an older female cat, and at first the kitten could not be within 5 feet of her without her hissing and making weird noises. Now he jumps on our older cat continually. She is much better than before, but very annoyed by him. She has never hurt him seriously, and in fact, I think that our little cat has done more damage to her, though not at all serious. I do not think that he would intentionally hurt her, rather he just wants to play. Our older cat is not very friendly though, so your cat may be different.

I do not think that you need to get a declawed cat, but you probably do want to clip it's nails. We do that with our kitten, and the vet said that eventually they will start to get like dog nails (very dull) but to get to that point you need to continually clip it's nails, not just once. You cut them just like a dog's, but if you do not want to do it, than the vet will do it for you, if you ask.

Your cat could probably still defend itself even being declawed. My mother had a cat that could catch mice without any claws, and could defend herself with her teeth.

For a boy or girl cat, it would probably be better to get a girl, because males do tend to fight over territory. If your cats do not get along at first, there is something you can get that will make the cats smell the same (not to human noses, to the animals) therefore the cats are less hostile and will stay around each for a while. When introducing the cats to each other, you don't even want to put them in the same room together. Pet both of your cats with different towels and give it to the other one to smell. Keep them in separate areas of the house. After they get used to the towel, then let them explore each others end of the house, but still don't let them see each other. When they get used to that, let them smell and bat at each other through a door. Finally, you can bring them in a room together, but on two different peoples laps. If you live alone, maybe have a familiar friend to your old cat come over and just hold him. Hold the kitten on your lap. If that goes okay, then the next day maybe even let them go on the floor by each other. You can just keep going forward from there. Don't immediately stop monitoring them though, because it could end up ugly. Once you are totally sure they are okay with each other, then start letting them on their own a bit. If it doesn't, then keep on that same step until it does.

We did not do this with our cats, as I did not know about it at the time. Now I think that things would have gone a lot better if we did.

Well, I hope this helped! Have fun with your new kitten! They are truly wonderful gifts from God.Id like to bring another cat into my home but im not sure how to go about it. Help?
I would suggest not getting another cat. You should get another older dog. Cats for some reason do better bringing a dog into the house then another cat.

My cousin/bff had a declawed cat. She got a dog and she (the cat) didn't like it but she was fine with it. Then she got another cat (kitten) and the cat stopped eating. She did not like the new kitten. My cousin would try to force feed her but nothing would work. She also took her to the vet to see if there was anything medically wrong with her and there wasn't. Eventually she ended up with kidney failure. And by the time she started eating again it was too late for the cat and she ended up dying.

Also because he has never been around other cats. I took my cat over to my cousin's house to try to get her use to cats (because someday I plan on getting more) and it had only been about six months since she had seen another cat and the whole time all she did was hiss and freak out the whole time. She was about a year old. That was also the first time I had ever heard her hiss. So it's not like my cat would normally hiss at stuff.

I personally think if it's a dog your cat fell in love with that might work better. But to by honest she might not even like another dog. No other animal will fill the void your cat has right now if she was really close to your dog. It might help it but it won鈥檛 be the same.

Good luck with your kitty and I'm sorry about your dog.
I've had many cats in my life, all of which are partly declawed. I got another male cat to keep my first male cat company, and they fought to the point where I had to give one away. Male's are more dominant and like to be the head of their 'domain', so if another male comes into the picture, they get kinda angry. I personally think that getting a female be in best interest. Just make sure that either your cat or the female(if you get one) is neutered/spayed, unless you would like little kittens running around :)

It depends on your cats personality as well, and the one you would get. I hope this helps you!
