How accurate do fictional books have to be?

I'm only 16, but I love to write.

My goal in the future is to become a published author.

I was just wondering, how accurate do fictional books have to be?

I'm currently writing a book about a girl who has Glioblastoma multiforme.

I know that is has to be believable, I've done lots of research on the disease and I get that THIS book most likely won't even be published.. but I still want to write it as if it is, to get my best writing out.

I guess that my main concern is offending people with Glioblastoma multiforme or people who have lost love ones to the disease. I wouldn't want them to go and sue me or something ;p

So where does that leave me?

If the information I give in a fictional book isn't as accurate as real life can anyone do anything about it?

Can I be sued for it?

I just love to write, and I want to share that with everyone with out offending anyone.

Thanks! :)How accurate do fictional books have to be?
If you are presenting this as a story, even if fictional, about a specif subject matter, to get the reader to suspend disbelief you must be spot on accurate. To achieve this you can A) write about what you know or B) do a ton of research and have your story fact checked by experts. If you are really passionate about the subject matter do your research and have it fact checked by at least two qualified sources--like a reporter would--and then include them in your dedication or acknowledgment page. How accurate do fictional books have to be?
If published as fiction, they don't have to be accurate at all.
If you do not get your facts straight, it might not be published. Should you get it past an editor, you may offend readers and/or receive a lot of negative mail regarding the inaccuracies in your book.

Do your research. Be respectful.

Can you be sued for presenting inaccurate information? Perhaps with defamation. I recommend doing your research and making sure its accurate.
Can you be sued for it? No. Can you offend and upset people who are living (more likely, dying) with your plot device? Absolutely you can.

Unless you have first hand experience of the disease, or access to someone who does who is happy to read your story and discuss its realism, I'd stay well clear. Especially if your plot is going to focus on a miraculous recovery, or on how brave she is to cope with her illness. It's FAR too easy to trivialise things which are awful in real life for the sake of making your character look heroic. It's downright cruel when there are real people out there who don't feel at all heroic about it.
if you've done your research than i wouldn'r imagine you would offend anyone -- philip pullman isn't get sued for his book and he offended an awful lot of people lol

hope this helps, good luck :)
If your writing it like it's realistic, then it should be fairly accurate. If it's about famous people, don't put too much fakeness about them. If it's about about a land where ponies walk on water, you can put whateeeever you want
