Need advice for my friend, he is stuck at hi! how are you?

My friend somehow wasn't able to get reply from the girl he loves and whenever he starts conversation with her he is stuck at hi! how are you? what could be interesting topics he could talk to and start conversation with his friend (the girl whom he loves) so he gets response, as a result can share things and know and understand each other better?

Hi, tell him to ask about her likes dislike, then take her out if possibles, give her some flowers, once it gets a starter then they will move....

I would say the method which I apply: Always ask or tell something about the activity she is doing currently. Like if you see her while reading some books so just tell her that '; I was also searching for the same book, from where you got it..?'; like this. so always see and say about her current activity.

what about some hot stuff? i mean, latest news reports, new movies, things that happen around the neighborhood. like, ';have you heard the volcano in europe is still causing problems, terrible isn't it?'; ';have you seen that movie? i don't typically like drama, but the cast is wonderful. what do you think?'; everybody like to talk about themselves, but he should also participate in conversation instead of just asking questions.
The first thing for him is to find out if she is also in love with him before he proceeds further than the Hi.If he is able to find out if she also loves him, things change automatically. He can then start sharing his views, listening to her views and replying to them. It is easy as that. And why does he need you as a go between, I don't understand.
